Phuture
Singapore
Opened in December 1996, Phuture's long, winding bar and unique music policy covering big beat, hip hop, breaks, drum 'n' bass, down tempo and anything experimental makes it a perfect spot to enjoy a cocktail or two before heading down to the main Zouk dance floor or Velvet Underground.
Phuture reflects Zouk's dedication to the outer-edges of entertainment where pushing the limit and stimulating the imagination are high priority. Everything in the room reflects this - from the music and lighting to the architecture and detailed decor. The walls are adorned with original artworks by Massimo Iosa-Ghini, whose futuristic paintings inspired the design of Phuture. These paintings have been used as the templates for mosiac murals for a new metro station in Hanover, Germany for their Expo 2000. There is also a major artwork by Roy Lichtenstein. The cast aluminum and fibreglass furniture, designed by Jorge Pensi and imported from Spain, reinforce the room's aerodynamic free-form design.
The style is an eclectic mix of modernism, retro-futurism, and art deco. As expected in any of the Zouk outlets, the sound and lighting are state of the art. The room itself looks out over the main Zouk dance floor.
Open three nights a week, Phuture aims for a relaxed trendy crowd comfortable with meeting for a drink most nights of the week - straight from work, pre-dinner or as a nightcap after a movie. The space is intimate and develops into a mini-club with 200-plus capacity as the night goes on.
Being a smaller room with a capacity of 200, Phuture experiments with the outer edges of music, entertainment and fashion statements. |
