Description

Around 1740, after Mère Henriod had distilled her first versions of absinthe in Switzerland, this new spirit moved on to the Vorarlberg state (or Land) in western Austria. Vorarlberg is beautifully situated at the borders of Switzerland and Germany, directly at the Bodensee, the largest lake in Europe. Thanks to the different climes in this small federal state, there is a large diversity of vegetation.







There is a lot of fruit-growing due to the mild maritime climate, furthermore herbs and meadow due to the beautiful Alps Mountains. In this region, there always was and still is a lot of agriculture. It had always been the tradition that every farmer had his “distillation right” and was thus able to distil his own “homemade” schnapps. There has always been a huge variety of fruit and herb schnapps like nowhere else: Cherry, pear, raspberry, apple, rowan berry, gentian, bitters…to mention only a few. Therefore, it is not surprising that the art of absinthe distillation had reached the country of schnapps.







References in the Vorarlberg chronicles can be found that absinthe was distilled here in the middle of the 18th century. In 1868, Kaspar Alois Greber developed the first main features of today’s upsynth original absinthe. The family recipe was passed on to the descendants and was then improved and further developed.

However, the height of popularity of absinthe was reached during the “fin du siècle” era in France. Literary giants like Baudelaire, Rimbaud and Maupassant and painters like Picasso and van Gogh enjoyed absinthe. Van Gogh reputedly cut off his ear whilst drinking absinthe.



Then, however, absinthe became disreputable. The murder by Jean Lanfray of his family in 1905 was blamed, incorrectly, on absinthe. Opponents of absinthe, such as the French winemakers, jumped at this story but concealed that the man was a known alcoholic who drank up to five litres of wine a day.

In 1906, Belgium was the first country to abolish absinthe, followed by the Netherlands. In 1923, also Austria imposed a ban. In the good old family tradition of the Greber family and other schnapps distillers, this ban was completely ignored. As a result, the “green fairy” went underground and the absinthe black market was opened. This beverage was now clandestinely distilled in the mountains, quite in secrecy, and quietly distributed. For almost 80 years, the aromatic hard liquor was banned for health reasons.



In the 1970’s, Christian Greber was given the recipe as had been the family tradition. Since the beginning of the 21st century, it has again been legally allowed. In 2004, the Furore company took up trade and distribution of upsynth original. Furore intends to have upsynth available worldwide.







The secret of the upsynth brand is that it is distilled from 20 different herbs, amongst others wormwood, fennel, anise and gentian. Some of the herbs grow high in the mountains, at heights of 2000 m above sea level. They are still harvested there and used for the production of Upsynth.



















The dried herbs are macerated in a neutral spirit and then distilled a second time. This secondary distillation is necessary to make an authentic absinthe. This, and the quality of ingredients, gives upsynth original it’s characteristically smooth finish. The distillate is produced under the most strict and rigorous quality conditions. The Upsynth taste is absolutely natural and no artificial flavours are added.
