When Ellen Ryanâs Hotel Victoria first opened its doors for business on September 8, 1890, it instantly earned a place as one of Darwinâs (then Palmerstonâs) best known and well-loved social landmarks. More than a century later the imposing restored stone building still stands as a monument to the Territoryâs pioneering spirit and the colourful people who helped develop that spirit.
Ellen Ryan, the woman who built the âVicâ and who was the driving force behind the hotel for more than quarter of a century, was a colorful character of her day. She arrived in Darwin in 1873, within three years of the town being founded on the back of big gold discoveries in the Northern Territory and moved to the gold fields near Pine Creek. She quickly realised that there was as lucrative market for âliquid goldâ in the Territory, as there was for the mineral variety. Within a few weeks she leased the Minerâs Arms hotel, the first in the area. She went on to establish hotels all over the Top End over the following 15 years.
Ellen eventually became one of the Territoryâs wealthiest women, owning land and several mining leases. In 1888, just as the economy began to slow, she moved into the relative âbig timeâ of the Territory hotel trade, lodging an application with the licensing board for a prestigious two story hotel to be built in Smith Street.
The Northern Territory Times, September 12, 1980 said:
âMrs. Ryanâ¦has placed at the convenience of the public a hotel which is a credit to her enterprise and an estimable token of city improvement and the least we can do is to wish that she may find as time goes on that her confidence in the resources of Palmerston was not misplaced.â
Despite the economic depression at the time and a few natural and human disasters over the years, history has proved that Ellen Ryan had both pluck and wisdom in building the âVicâ. It has not only proved to be one of the Territoryâs most popular watering holes, it went on to be the centre of much of Darwinâs social life for the past century.
