WEDNESDAY NIGHTS FROM 8:30
STEVE AND THE TEES
Steve and the Tees are a classic example of the spirit of small group jazz finding its way into the corner of a bar, drawing in some eager musicians to play it and making a home for itself. Welcomed with open arms by the friendly and music-conscious staff of the Glass Bar, Steve and the Tees have made this cosy little corner their musical home every Wednesday night for the past year.
Playing a mix of jazz standards, loose bar funk and freely improvised, groove-based material, the group's sound is most often characterised by the absence of a chordal instrument. The group is led by Steve Powell at the drums, an ever-growing force of musical nature who lays it down like no other and drives the groove with the utmost of taste from the drum chair. Regular players with the Tees include Darcy McNulty (saxophones, of Kafka fame), Greg Gottlieb (Double Bass) and an assortment of musically talented friends of the band.
Named for a long-running joke about the bandleader's supposedly appalling fashion sense, the Tees are all about having a good time while making music from the moment. Head into the Glass Bar on a Wednesday night and you're guaranteed to hear the spirit of jazz created in bars oozing out through the playing and camaraderie of Steve and the Tees.
